DP World Dubai or also called Dubai Ports world is a maritime industry company that runs Emirati multinational logistics. The company is headquartered in Dubai, UAE. DP World was formed in 1999 and is getting bigger over the Dubai Ports Authority and Dubai ports international merger. Brief history

The story of the DP world’s success started in 1999. That was the time when the company formed under the name of Dubai Port International (DPI). From that time, the company project circles around local partnerships at Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. It starts the expansion by doing some operations in other countries, including Djibouti, Vizag India, and Constanta Romania.

In the later stage, DP got even bigger in 2005 when the company was formed above the merger of two Dubai ports companies. It was Dubai Ports Authority and Dubai Ports international. By the time of its mergers, the rapid expansion was undergoing and continued until March 2006. At that time DP world bought P&O, the fourth-largest port for £ 3.9 billion.

However, 2006 wasn’t the best year for DP world Dubai. Several U.S ports under DP were sold afterward due to the controversial rumor. The P&O that operates major port facilities in the U.S also gets the backlash. It later gave green light, but then the democratic and republican members of congress don’t take the arrangement quite right and doubt the security level.

The decision ended when DP sold the P&Os American operation to the American international group’s asset management division. On the other hand, the positive news comes as in August 2006 DP signed an agreement with Port Qasim Authority.

Unfortunately, DP lost the Qwadar port concession as the company withdrew from the bidding. The bad things stayed in 2006 and in 2007 DP started a massive expansion. In June 2007, DP gained $3.25 billion for conventional bond sales. At the same time, DP also issued 3.818 billion shares. It helps DP to gain NASDAQ Dubai listing exchange with a 20% share.

It got bigger in 2008 with 46.8 million TEU worldwide. The company also continually expands to India, the Middle East, China, etc. As in 2010, DP world has a contract with the London gateway port with a £1.5 billion construction fund. Since then, it has more than 70 million containers, with 82 marine and inland terminals that spread worldwide.

Business Affairs

The business affair of DP world Dubai includes three big sectors, supply chain security, counter-piracy, and Berbera operations. The counter-piracy business was under the UAE ministry of foreign affairs. It focuses on the subject of piracy protection against Somalia’s pirate coast. It was the first time that companies are the one as the contributor to this kind of counter-piracy trust fund.

In 2016, DP created a great leap as it secured an agreement with Somaliland. The agreement receives US$442 million that involves some port Berbera enhancement, including the operation enhancement on both port and logistic hubs. The agreement also comes with a larger memorandum of understanding between UAE and Somaliland. Later on, it strengthens the strategic ties.
